A winter day

 At Cassiobury Park

As I ventured for my walk

In the naked local park

The fog was low and dark

Resembling heavy smoke

 

And while the majestic cedar

Stood as the park’s leader

Most of the other bare trees

Left to shiver and to sneeze

 

The leaves were dying in pain

But their lives were not in vain

For they will be born again

To dance come sun or rain

 

And while the air was cold as ice

The squirrel that played late

And forgot to hibernate

Was paying the hefty price

 

Then it was the cheeky robin

Who was playing hide and seek

With his mate along the creek

Darting like a nimble bobbin

 

I could hear a woodpecker

Busily hard at work

Taping at the ancient oak

Looking for early supper

 

And the dog that jumped and ran

Then sat down to wag his tail

Teasing his pal you will fail

So come and catch me if you can

 

Some people would nod only

Showing them very friendly

Others would nod and smile

Making it worth the while

 

By then it was very clear

That I should persevere

For whatever is the weather

A walk in the park is a pleasure
